70th Anniversary of 1950s Sci-Fi Film Written by Ray Bradbury

Well, the summer is at hand, and that means a season of movies coming out in the nice cool air-conditioned theatres but also on the internet and in stores too. I'm not really into direct-to-video movies like I'm not on made-for-TV ones, but there are exceptions. One exception, or what at least seems to be so far, is an upcoming remake of a science fiction classic. I'll talk about that in a bit. First, I want to pay tribute to another classic science fiction film that’s anniversary is today. This day 70 years ago must've been a really exciting one for movie audiences. That's when the sci fi flick, "It Came from Outer Space", released in US theatres and was one of the first movies to be featured in 3D. Also, the script was originally written by science fiction/fantasy author Ray Bradbury! I also have a little of the latest on my upcoming book of short fiction, "Bad Apps"!  70th Anniversary of 'It Came from Outer Space' In 1953, the alien in...

Book-To-Movie: Ray Bradbury's 'The Fog Horn'

Credit: Pixabay It's the fourth weekend of the month and so time for another Book-To-Movie review! In a Book-To-Movie, we review a work of prose fiction and its movie adaptation.  When he was a kid, Ray Bradbury was greatly inspired by the giant monsters of mythology and science fiction. His stories reflect this inspiration. One of these is his short work, "The Fog Horn". This story was adapted to film in the 1950s which was titled "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms". This was actually the original name of Bradbury’s short story. So why the name changes? I’ll explain that in a bit. First, I want to go over the differences in plot between the short story and the movie, one of the biggest being the degree of sympathy for the monster.  'The Fog Horn' In “The Fog Horn”, an assistant to a lighthouse keeper who is also the story's narrator discovers that a prehistoric sea monster annually comes to the lighthouse mistaking it for one of its own kind. Even thoug...

R.I.P. Ray Bradbury: A Very Sad Loss to Science Fiction/Fantasy

Photo Credit: Alan Light/Wikimedia Commons It's been a sad week for many of us sci fi/fantasy fans since one of the greatest writers ever in the two genres passed away this past Tuesday--Ray Bradbury. Ray Bradbury was one of the first science fiction writers who I seriously read. The very first novel by him that I purchased and read was The Martian Chronicles when I was a senior in high school. From then on I was hooked. I've read and collected nearly all his books of fiction and although I haven't read as much of his nonfiction books, the few that I did are totally awsome! Other fiction of his that I've read have been, Fahrenheit 451 , the second book that I read, and The Toynbee Convector which I bought the summer immediately after my high school graduation and just before I entered my freshman year of college. Later I collected and read The October Country , a collection of his dark fiction, his dark fantasy novel Something Wicked This Way Comes , The Illu...
