Well, Halloween’s come and gone. It was mostly a virtual one for me and so most of my celebrating was online. Except later that evening in my living room when I watched a couple of horror flicks over some oatmeal cream sandwich cookies and diet cola. Still, it was good enough. I hope all of you had a groovy ghoulish Halloween!
NaNoWriMo and My Novella
Now we’re into November, and for us writers that is the month of NaNoWriMo! Although I’m not a novelist and so don’t really participate in the celebration of novel writing, I’m returning to revising my novella, “Invasion of the Avatars”, this month. That’s a novella that I wrote during a NaNoWriMo of several years back. One of the benefits that I offer at my Patreon page are works in progress and, in celebration of NaNoWriMo, I will be offering an excerpt of my novella in progress. So, if you’ve joined or plan to join my Patreon page at the third Portal (or Tier) membership then you will get to see part of my book as it is being revised.
My Writing’s Paper Excess
Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot to offer in this week’s post since it’s been a very busy afternoon on this Saturday. My kitchen table had a pile of old manuscripts, blog post outlines and task logs that were ready to spill over and so I was spending all afternoon cleaning them out. I like to keep as many of my writing project plans as possible for the record, but when space becomes limited I have to pick and choose. So that’s what I did today and the mess is not even half cleaned up yet! But what I chose to keep is any fiction in progress whether of published work or work yet to be published because that shows the history of a writer’s work and the evolution of a world in words. I write too many blog posts to hold onto brainstorms and outlines for. So, after a year has gone by and I see that I have not had to look back on these written plans for posts then I shred them. But my fiction’s work in progress, at least for the large part, I’ll always keep.
Sci Fi Article Links
I’d like to leave you with a couple of links to some articles that I found to be really fascinating! Both of them discuss past and present science fiction, one of which is by science fiction author Cory Doctorow!
“In 2020, Is Science Fiction Still an Escape?”: PCMag interviews Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society (LASFS) President Matthew B. Tepper on how to approach science fiction when it’s turned into science fact, particularly during this apocalyptic time of a pandemic. Tepper also talks about the origin of LASFS and how you can become a member. He even says that Ray Bradbury is still a member post-mortem! How can that be possible? Find out by checking out the article!
“Beyond Cyberpunk: The Intersection of Technology and Science Fiction”: Cory Doctorow talks about cyberpunk’s influence on a generation of computer technologists, the technologist and wizard archetypes in the subgenre, and how a sci fi writer can master technology for their fiction without a college degree.
That’s it for this week. I’ll be back next week with more! How did your Halloween go? Are you participating in NaNoWriMo? How much of your stories in progress (e.g. outlines, drafts, notes) do you hold onto after publication or after completing the work? How close do you think this time of the pandemic is to science fiction? (In other words, do you think it’s science fiction become science fact?)
Until next time . . .
Fortunately I don't have a lot printed out on paper.
ReplyDeleteHalloween was the usual. We haven't had trick-or-treaters in years anyway, so we just watch horror films.
My neighbourhood hasn't had any in years either. Sometimes I just prefer staying in and watching horror movies on Halloween.
