I know, it’s the third Saturday of the month when we’re supposed to have a Book-To-Movie review but I am going to have to postpone it until next weekend. The county I live in is still sheltering in place and so the DVD of the movie I’ve been wanting to review along with its book, “The Invisible Man”, is stuck inside my local library which is closed. I requested it through interlibrary loan but when it came, back in mid-March, the shelter-in-place mandate was just beginning. I was going to review another book and its movie adaptations this evening but the only place I know of where I can rent the movie at this time is Amazon’s IMDB TV platform. By the time I was able to figure out last night how Amazon wanted me to log into IMDB TV it was already late. The movie was 2008’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth” based on the book by the same name, written by Jules Verne. So, it looks like that will be next weekend’s postponed Book-To-Movie.
In this weekend’s post I have some Lightning News Flashes, A.K.A. Horror and Sci Fi News Bites. Why the alternative title? Because those vampires in Anne Rice’s “Vampire Chronicles” novels and the movie based on them really do bite. And, of course, because these news briefs are, like, really brief. The other flash or bite concerns the Science Fiction Writers of America’s (SFWA) membership elections that were recently held. In addition to these, I have a little about my novella I’ve been working on.
'The Vampire Chronicles' To Be Adapted Into A TV Series

Earlier this week, Tor reported that Anne Rice’s “The Vampire Chronicles” is in the plans for a television series adaptation. It will be produced for AMC, home of “The Walking Dead”. Another TV series also based on a series of Anne Rice’s novels, “The Lives of the Mayfair Witches”, will be aired on that same network. AMC is also home to that other vampire novel-based series, “NOS4A2”, a pun off of the German Dracula’s name, Nosferatu. “NOS4A2” the novel is written by Joe Hill. Tor even says there is the possibility that the two TV series based on Rice’s novels will be made to interconnect with each other. It is not known at this time when the two shows will premiere.
SFWA Now Accepting Comic Book Writing
The Science Fiction Writers of America, the member organisation that supports and assists professional speculative fiction writers, will now accept comic book and graphic novel writing as qualification for membership eligibility. This was voted on by the current members in SFWA’s 2020 election. The election resulted in a vote of 95.18% to 4.82%.
My Novella In Progress
I’ve revised my deadline schedule for the novella that I’m currently working on. The novella is a mixed genre of sci fi, horror and sword-and-sorcery about online game avatars that come into the real world . . . on a killing spree. So far, I’ve titled it “Invasion of the Avatars”. I’ve scheduled myself to have ten type-written pages revised every two weeks. Hopefully, taking into consideration beta readings, this will enable me to publish the novella some time by early 2021.
That’s it for this week’s horror and sci fi news. Tune in next week for a Book-To-Movie review of “Journey To the Center of the Earth”!
Do you think Anne Rice’s two book series, “The Vampire Chronicles” and “The Lives of the Mayfair Witches”, will work well as TV series? Do you think writing comic books and graphic novels should be legit qualifications for membership in the SFWA?
Until next time . . .
Avatars on a killing spree - sounds fun.
ReplyDeleteTurning a novel into a series works better because there is more time to devote to character development and they can cover the story in detail. Covering any story in a short series works best, as evidenced by the success of The Madalorian, Picard, and Stranger Things.
I may not mind making it into a series if it does well enough. However, I'm not really a writer of long fiction (as opposed to short stories) so I'm not sure I'd be willing to commit to a series. I'll have to see what happens.
